Frequently Asked Questions

Who are you?

We are a small independent business based in Melbourne, Australia.
We are not a chain or offshoot of some other large company.
We’re just a few friends who love cameras, dedicated to providing easy and affordable camera film supplies!

Do you have a physical shop I can visit? Can I pickup my order?

YES!
In late 2019 we opened our shop at on Brunswick Street, Fitzroy, Victoria.
In 2022 we moved to a bigger and better shop just up the road at 338 Brunswick Street. Come say hi!
We now offer in-store pickup, so you can place your order online and pickup direct from our store.

I need some film ASAP, can you help?

Yes, we understand that sometimes things happen and you may need film asap. Please feel free to send us an email at contact@walkens.com.au and we will do all we can to arrange an express courier delivery to you.
If you simply need film by tomorrow and you are in a Capital City, choose Express shipping (order before 12pm) and you should receive it tomorrow in most cases. If you’re in Melbourne, come by our Fitzroy store!

Do you stock “____” film?

If it isn’t listed on our site, then it may just be out of stock, or we don’t currently stock it. However, we are always on the lookout for new films to stock, so if there is a specific film you’re after, send us an email and we will do our best to get it in stock for you! Also, if you are after a certain quantity of a particular film, but we don’t have enough in stock, just email us and we’ll order some more in ASAP.

Do you ship to my country?

We do our best to ship all of our items worldwide. If your country doesn’t come up as an option during checkout, please email us for a more detailed shipping quote!

Do you charge GST?

Yes we do. We are an Australian company based in Melbourne, and therefore we have to collect 10% GST (Goods and Services Tax) on all our sales in Australia. All of our prices are shown including GST. If you are ordering from outside of Australia, the GST will be removed at checkout, so you save 10 per cent!
We appreciate your support of an independent Australian film shop. Your orders help to keep film alive and affordable in Australia, support our staff, and contribute $ and tax to the Australian economy.

How long will it take to get my order?

If you order before 12pm AEST we will ship out your order on the same day!
We do our best to ship orders even if they are placed after that time also.

Within Australia we offer two flat-rate shipping options for film orders; Standard Shipping and Express Shipping.
Standard Shipping is $8 flat-rate and should be with you after 2-9 business days.
Express Shipping is $10 flat-rate and arrives in 1 business day to most areas.
Larger, heavy items like liquid photographic chemicals are more expensive to ship, and the flat-rate options do not apply. Your postage cost for these items will be calculated at checkout.

Occasionally Express Post items may be delayed by Australia Post and take slightly longer to be delivered.
Unfortunately this is out of our control.

For some remote areas Express delivery may take 2-4 days.

My film isn’t exactly like the picture, is it ok?

All of our film is 100% original, fresh from manufacturers and well within expiry dates. Sometimes packaging from our suppliers will vary slightly from our website images as packaging is changed and updated, but rest assured your film is of the best quality and as described.
In some instances your film will be supplied in its protective plastic canister, not in a cardboard package. This is purely to keep our prices as low as possible for our customers.

What currency are your items?

All of our items are listed in Australian Dollars.

Is your checkout secure?

YES, we use leading payments system which accept a range of credit cards. These payment services are used by millions of businesses all around the world.

Where can I get a camera?

There’s literally millions of great film cameras in the world, just waiting to be loved again! Try asking your friends and family, we find that a lot of people have old film cameras in perfect condition just sitting in a cupboard somewhere. If you are in Melbourne it is worth checking out Peony Garden on Little Lonsdale Street. If you’re looking online, eBay is a good local source with lots of cameras.

Although not necessarily the cheapest source, US-based KEH Camera sell a wide range of used cameras in different conditions. Op shops can also have some hidden gems, and camera swap-meet markets are held regularly in most Australian cities, keep an eye out! We occasionally post reminders when these events are coming up in Melbourne, so be sure to follow us on Facebook and Instagram!
Also check out reshoot.com.au for a good local range of cameras.

I’m just starting out, what film should I use?

If you’re just getting used to shooting with your camera and exploring different settings etc, we recommend using Kodak Ultramax, Colorplus or Gold, Fujifilm Superia/X-tra or C200. For Black & White, we recommend the Kentmere or Fomapan films. These are all good quality entry level films that are well suited to a variety of different conditions and cameras. Once you’ve got the basics sorted you can start to explore the wonderful variety of films we have available, all with their own unique characteristics and qualities!

Do you sell ‘pro-packs’?

‘Pro-Packs’ are simply 5-roll boxes of film made by Kodak and Fujifilm.
We now sell a range of film in their original pro-packs and in 10-roll ‘Bricks’. Just scroll to the bottom of the 35mm and 120 film pages to see available options.

I want to learn more about film photography, where should I look?

If you’re having a particular issue or wondering about a particular film or camera, we suggest doing a quick google search. There are hundreds of great websites and blogs with specific info on everything from photographic styles to gear, theory, film etc. There are also a good range of YouTube channels specifically dedicated to all things cameras. We recommend Pushing Film, an Australian Youtube Channel about all things film photography. Also good are Matt Day Photo and The Art of Photography, two more channels with a focus on film photography. If you’re thinking of photography as a possible career, check out some of your local Universities and TAFE colleges, which offer everything from several day short-courses to 2 or 3 year degrees!

Where can I get my film processed?

We can process your film! We are currently processing C41 and Black and White. Check out the Lab Page for more info!
